This year, Hug Rug turns eighteen - can you believe it? We definitely can’t but it’s true. To celebrate this milestone and acknowledge the heritage and experience we’ve developed in those years, we decided it was time for a new space and look that reflected this.
Over the next weeks and months, you’re going to see elements of this rebrand, from our logo to our socials, but we wanted to write a few words to reassure our amazing customers that they can still expect the same high-quality, eco-conscious products and customer service that has always sat central to the Hug Rug ethos.
The new look simply gives us the chance to tell our story more clearly, to celebrate the journey we’ve been on as the original washable rug, and to share the values that have shaped Hug Rug’s past and will continue to shape our future.
Eighteen years is a long time in any business, and while our ethos and approach remains the same now as it did when we first set out, we realised that we had stories worth telling - stories that deserved a stronger voice.
Our parent company, Phoenox, has been working in textiles for over 70 years. That heritage is something we are immensely proud of, and yet we had only just scratched the surface in sharing it.
“We’ve always wanted Hug Rug to be about more than just the product,” our founder, Lizzie Mosley says. “It’s about people — the people who make our rugs and the people who buy them. It’s about process — the techniques, the care, and the investment we’ve made to create the best possible rugs. And it’s about pride — the pride that comes with making something sustainable, something beautiful, and something that earns its place in your home.”
We really wanted to ensure this this people, process, and pride philosophy sits front and centre to Hug Rug’s direction. It shapes everything from how we talk about our products, to how we celebrate our customers, through to how we design for the future.
In a sense, not much! As we’ve said, turning 18 felt like a real coming-of-age moment for us so it seemed like the perfect time for a new look. One that that reflects our maturity, heritage and expertise - but, don’t worry, we’ll never feel ‘too grown up’. Playfulness and being young at heart will always be part of who we are.
Initially, we just started to look at our website but as if often the case at Hug Rug HQ, we got a little carried away. We felt that if we had a nice, new home to house our range of eco-conscious rugs and mats online, then that needed a new logo, imagery and colours to match.
When it comes to the logo, we wanted to make tweaks that felt true to Hug Rug. Each of the decisions behind the new colours are inspired by our Huddersfield home. The rich red echoes the brickwork of the buildings that surround our factory. The green is drawn from the rolling Yorkshire countryside that we see from our windows. And the soft pink is a nod to Hug Rug’s original tagline: the mat with the heart.
When it came to the tagline and messaging, we wanted a phrase that captured Hug Rug’s unique, original offering with a nod to our history and heritage. That’s how we landed on ‘The Original Washable Rug, Made For Thoughtful Living’. A nod to the fact when Hug Rug was created, we created a product and company with sustainability and thoughtful living at its heart.
Alongside the website, logo, and messaging, we’ve got new imagery and videos that we can’t wait to show you. Keep your eyes on our channels for these, which we’ll be pairing with stories that focus on our people, our process and the pride we have in them!
One thing that won’t change just yet is our packaging, meaning you might notice a mixture of old and new as we transition into our new identify. We don’t believe in wasting perfectly good materials, and by using up what we have, we avoid unnecessary waste - which people should know by now, is what we’re all about. So if your Hug Rug arrives in older packaging for the time being, know that it’s still part of out eco-conscious approach.
For all that looks new, so much remains the same. Our high-quality products are still made with the same care as they’ve always been, using recycled and natural materials wherever possible. Alongside this our focus on customer service, a friendly human voice at the end of the phone, is still a key element of our offering. No AI here, just real people and real skill.
Same as we were eighteen years ago, Hug Rug remains proudly committed to sustainability, to keeping waste out of landfill, and to creating rugs that don’t just look good but do good. In the the words of our founder, Lizzie, “Sustainability and product innovation are at the heart of everything we do. From the very beginning, we committed to being eco-friendly - using responsibly sourced yarns, investing in recycling, and designing products that last. That means we’re always looking into new processes and practices that reduce our impact and protect the world we live in. For us, eco-consciousness isn’t a trend. It’s the foundation of Hug Rug.”
We still manufacture the vast majority of our products here in the UK. That choice isn’t always easy - it comes with costs and challenges - but it means we retain complete control over design, quality, and stock, and we can respond quickly to customer needs. In the last decade alone, we’ve invested £9.5 million into our facilities, ensuring Hug Rug can continue to deliver on promise. And, perhaps most importantly, keeping production local allows us to invest in our community and protect skills for the next generation.
So, whether you’re choosing a washable doormat for a hallway, a soft rug for a living space, or a bespoke size for an unusual room, you can trust that every Hug Rug carries the same promise it always has: style, sustainability, and reliability that allow you to live thoughtfully.
