Caring For Your Mats & Rugs

At Hug Rug, our eco-focused products are made to last, but they need a little love and attention to look as lovely as they can for as long as possible. We’ve got a few tips and tricks below on on how to give them the life they deserve.

General Tips and Tricks

  • If a stain won’t shift, always consider professional cleaning. This is especially relevant for delicate fibres such as viscose, sisal, wool, or jute.
  • Our products are made with your floors in mind, so are designed not to leave marks on flooring. In certain instances, cleaning products, sunlight and heat may cause discolouration to certain types of flooring when covered. We highly recommend airing the floor underneath frequently and always ensuring both the rug and the floor are not damp or wet when laying it down.
  • For machine washing, use a large drum or a laundrette for bigger sizes and always follow the product page temperature recommendation.
  • Roll - don’t fold - for storage.
  • Don’t use bleach or machine-dyes.

Hug Rug & Sense Collections

Durable everyday washable mats & rugs — follow simple home-wash steps to keep them
looking fresh.

  • Initial shedding is normal; vacuum (suction only) to reduce loose fibres.
  • For machine washing: place rug inside a cotton pillowcase or wash bag, use a quick cotton wash 30°C, low spin.
  • Before washing, ensure to remove excess debris with a quick vacuum or brush.
  • Don’t use biological detergents or fabric conditioner.
  • Remove excess debris before washing and check your machine filter afterwards.
  • Line or flat dry; an occasional short cool tumble (10 mins) can help restore pile on some products - don’t tumble on high. Move occasionally during drying to avoid bumps forming.
  • Never leave rugs on damp floors; avoid prolonged direct heat or steam-cleaner contact (it can affect backing).
  • For very large rugs, spot-clean or use a launderette / professional cleaner.

Easy Care Rugs

Practical, stain-resistant rugs built for high-traffic and activity rooms.

  • Vacuum regularly with suction-only (turn off beater/bar).
  • New rugs may shed at first - this fades after a few hoovers so don’t be alarmed.
  • Spot clean quickly in this order. Blot, dilute with a wet cloth, apply a little liquid soap, scrub gently, rinse, hang to dry.
  • Avoid saturating - these rugs dry quickly, but trapped moisture can cause mould.
  • Use an anti-slip underlay on hard floors to prevent slipping and extend rug life.

Eco-Washable Rugs

Machine-washable, recycled-fibre rugs designed for easy home care.

  • Vacuum gently to remove surface dirt before washing.
  • Spot treatment: blot, then use a mild cleaner working from edge to centre.
  • Machine wash: quick / gentle cycle at 30°C (use a large drum or laundrette for big sizes).
  • Don’t use bleach or fabric conditioner as this affects the longevity of the product’s washable nature.
  • Line/flat dry; avoid tumble drying on high. Move occasionally during drying to avoid bumps forming.
  • Natural-speckled backing (from sustainable rubber) and small backing marks are normal - lift occasionally to air the floor underneath.

Washing Machine Size Guide

75 x 220 cm

*We suggest visiting your local laundromat if your washing machine is smaller than the size recommended for your rug.

Jute Rugs

Durable natural fibre that must be kept as dry as possible.

  • Vacuum weekly with beater-bar OFF; vacuum under the rug too (shed fibres can collect underneath). Regularly vacuuming stops dirt becoming embedded in the fibres.
  • Blot spills immediately - use warm water for many stains.
  • For acidic stains (wine, tomato): neutralise with soda water.
  • For stubborn marks: dilute washing-up liquid, blot, then rinse and dry with a hairdryer.
  • Use as little water as possible when cleaning as jute is a very absorbent material and may become mouldy if not allowed to dry fully.
  • We recommend using anti-slip underlay on hard floors for safety, longevity, and to protect floors.

My Rug

A family-friendly, low-maintenance rug range. Line/flat-dry or machine-washable, making
them ideal for busy homes with lots of potential spills.

  • Rinse under the tap for small marks or machine wash at 40°C for heavier soiling.
  • Line dry flat. Move occasionally during drying to avoid bumps forming.

My Mat

Coir and natural doormats - our most robust products but read the instructions carefully as each product can have different cleaning instructions:

  • Scrape off mud and debris first.
  • Hang outside and beat with a broom handle to loosen dirt.
  • Use a brush to remove remaining dirt - rinse lightly if needed.
  • Lay flat to dry thoroughly - don’t store damp.

Recycled PET rugs

Hard-wearing, low-maintenance synthetic rugs designed for regular use, and that require
little looking after.

  • Vacuum frequently with a soft suction head (avoid stiff brush heads).
  • New rugs may shed short fibres - trim with scissors and vacuum.
  • Treat spills quickly: blot, apply appropriate carpet cleaner working edge to centre, pat dry and vacuum after drying.
  • Use anti-slip underlay on hard floors for safety and longevity (if the product has no rubber backing).

Sculptured Washable Rugs

Textured, stain-resistant designs - wash only when needed.

  • Shake outside then vacuum with suction-only. Rotate to even wear.
  • For spills: blot, lift to check for through-marks, use a wet cloth with liquid soap, scrub gently, line dry.
  • For bigger/ tougher soiling you can machine wash 30°C (pillowcase/wash bag, low spin).
  • Don’t use fabric conditioner; avoid leaving on damp floors; avoid high tumble-dryer heat; beware prolonged steam-cleaning on backing.

Sheepskin Rugs

Natural, delicate pile - clean gently to protect fur and leather.

  • Do not machine wash
  • Vacuum with suction hose only (no beater bar).
  • Brush occasionally with a wire pet brush; some loose fibres are normal.
  • For spills: remove solids, blot, wipe with cold/lukewarm water + wool shampoo (or mild soap/baby shampoo) following the fur direction.
  • Dry flat away from direct heat and sunlight; brush or vacuum once fully dry.
  • Use anti-slip underlay if rug lacks rubber backing for safety and longevity.

Sisal Rugs

Strong, natural fibre rugs best kept dry and brushed.

  • Vacuum in one direction (not back-and-forth) using a standard head.
  • Blot spills immediately with an unbleached cotton cloth - avoid soaking.
  • A rug pad is recommended to extend life; latex-backed sisal usually does not need extra underlay.
  • Professional cleaning is recommended for stubborn stains.
  • Roll (don’t fold) for storage.

Viscose Rugs

Beautiful but water-sensitive - clean with extreme care as they are delicate.

  • Vacuum gently and avoid regular vacuuming with beater bars; use suction hose or carpet sweeper and follow pile direction.
  • Treat spills immediately and sparingly: blot dry (do not scrub) to absurd as much moisture as possible. If needed, lightly dampen a cloth with distilled water and a tiny drop of dish soap and blot gently. Follow immediately with a dry cloth to move moisture.
  • Dry away from heat and direct sunlight - a cool hairdryer can speed drying, if necessary.
  • Viscose can yellow if over-wet, so minimal water is essential. Consider professional cleaning for large stains.

Washable Rugs

Rugs designed for machine washing - follow product-specific temperatures found on care labels.

  • Vacuum regularly with suction-only; rotate to even wear.
  • Tackle spills immediately: blot, lift to check bleed-through, then follow product wash temperature (many washable rugs advise 40°C).
  • Line/flat dry; avoid heavy tumble heat.
  • Use anti-slip underlay for non-rubber backed styles for safety and longevity.

Wool & Wool-Mix Rugs

Natural fibres with specific cleaning needs.

  • Expect some initial fluff; vacuum with suction-only (avoid beater bars).
  • For spills: blot with white cloth, apply wool-approved cleaner or wool laundry detergent edge to centre, pat dry and vacuum.
  • Repeat if necessary; if stain persists, seek professional cleaning.
  • We recommend using an anti-slip underlay for safety, longevity, and to protect
    floors.
